Frequently Asked Questions

What are the school hours?
The school day is from 8:30 a.m. to 3:10 p.m. Drop-off is from 8:00 – 8:30 and pick-up is from 3:15 – 3:45.

What type of calendar does the school use?
The school year runs from mid-August to late May. Our calendar mostly follows, with a few exceptions, the Jefferson County Public School calendar. Occasionally, a change will be made to accommodate our school’s needs.

Is any transportation provided to and from school?
Parents are responsible for their child’s transportation to and from school each day. Several families from the school do carpool. At the beginning of each school year, families who are interested in carpooling are given the opportunity to make other AIE families aware of their transportation needs. This has helped many families connect to help each other.

What does the school provide for lunch?
AIE does not have a hot lunch table. Students are responsible for bringing their lunch each day. Milk is available for sale to all students. In addition, some food items such as sandwiches, chips and drinks are available for sale during lunch for grades 5-12.

Microwaves and refrigerators are available for the storage and preparation of food items. Teachers make any food preparations necessary for grades K-4 and are available for the older children as well, should they require assistance.

What is the dress code?
AIE expects its students to come prepared each day for the process of learning. We believe that each child’s dress reflect this purpose. There is not a uniform policy, but student dress is guided by a student dress code. This allows for the student to exercise the process of choice and individual identity within certain boundaries. The complete dress code is outlined in the student handbook.

What is the student to teacher ratio?
The student-teacher ratio in the elementary is 1:10 while the ratio is 1:11 in the high school. The typical class size is about 20. The elementary grades are structured in such a way as to give the teacher opportunity to work with small groups of 10-12 students during core academic times. The high school teachers employ different techniques that allow them to work with smaller groups, when needed.

What are the qualifications of AIE’s teachers?
The majority of our teachers have a college degree in education or their area of study with many having a master’s degree in education. Most importantly, all receive on-going training regarding our philosophy and methodology. In addition, AIE experiences very low turnover with its faculty and staff, having an average of about 10 years of service.

What curriculum does AIE use?
AIE has built a curriculum that has grown and developed throughout its history using material and methodology that has demonstrated success in the classroom. Each grade is presented with grade level material in a manner consistent with the Academy’s methods and philosophy.

At the high school level, the Academy offers the classes outlined by the KHEAA, as required for pre-college curriculum.

Is AIE accredited?
Yes, through AdvancEd SACS.
